Your Letters

May 2005

Dear Georgia,

I am just starting to become interested in the Pagan way of life. I recently purchased a wand and am very keen to start using it but am not sure how to start. Is it possible for you to send me some exercises to do or is there a really good book you could recommend for me?

Belinda, Lancashire

Dear Belinda,

First of all, congratulations on purchasing your first wand. Purists may say that you must find your wand from a tree, shape and then work with it. But who’s to say that looking for and buying the wand you like best isn’t just as good? Your wand is one of the most important of your Wiccan tools, so ensure that you truly feel connected because this instrument will be used for attracting, repelling; as a director of energy and circle casting. It’s essentially a simple tool, but a must have for any serious witch.

Once you have your wand, you’ll need to bless it. Your wand should be blessed during a full moon; begin by casting your circle. You must pass your wand through the four elements: Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Each time, requesting that the element bless your wand. When you’ve done this, if you’re not outside already, present your wand under the full moon to the Lord and Lady and assure them that you will use it only for the greater good. Then your wand is ready to start working its magic.

A wand’s corresponding element is Air. This means that when this element is required in spell casting, planning your altar etc, you can use your wand.

Its direction is East, so when laying out your altar, place your wand in the eastern corner.

Its corresponding colour is yellow; again this comes in handy whilst performing colour magic if you have nothing yellow at hand.

The wand’s gender is Male/Female it represents the male or female element of magic and your altar.

Now you’ve blessed your wand, you need to carry out a few simple exercises with it.

Directing Energy:

Hold your wand in your left hand (or right if you’re left handed). Choose a small object, perhaps a glass of water or a bowl and point your wand at it. Feel the energy pass down your arm into your wand and pouring out of the tip of the wand into the object you have chosen. Perform this once a day, and after a few weeks, you’ll find this becomes quite easy. The aim of this exercise is for you to learn how to charge objects for magical use.

Blessed Be,

Georgia.
