Dear Georgia,
I’m new to the craft and have heard about drawing down the
moon but I’m not sure what this is or how to do it, can you
please help me?
Claire, Leeds
Dear Claire
The ritual for drawing down the full moon's energy
into one’s-self
is known as Drawing down the Moon. When the ritual is completed,
you’ll experience a sensitive trance state combined with a
power surge that radiates throughout your body.
Here’s an explanation
of how solitary witches can draw down the moon alone.
You should draw
down the moon during a full moon esbat after you’ve
cast your circle (see our Guide to Circle
Casting in This Month’s
Rituals). Some witches use a wand or athame when drawing down the
moon.
First you must form the Goddess Position: cross your arms over
your chest with the wand or athame in your right hand. As you look
at
the full moon and start to feel its power entering you, gradually
raise your arms directly above your head, and clasping the wand or
athame with both hands, point it directly at the moon and recite:
"I
ask that the power of the Moon Goddess be with me, her power and
her purity".
Feel your wand or athame channelling the
strength of the moon to enter you and your vibration rising. When
you feel ready, bring your
wand or athame slowly down and point it directly at your heart. You
now need to visualise a bright blue light entering your body from
it’s [wand or athame] point, diffusing your entire being. Once
you feel at one with this energy, you can then bring your arms back
down to your sides. You’re now filled with the power of the
Moon Goddess and are ready to undertake your magical workings.
When
you’ve finished, you need to release all the energy you
have been holding. The way to do this is to simply step back, and
place your hands on the ground and allow the stored energy to return
directly to the earth. This is referred to as grounding yourself
and can be used during any ritual.
The process takes a great deal
of concentration and the power comes from within yourself. You must
give yourself willingly into the arms
of the Goddess and be ready to feel the full power of the divine.
This
is a simple explanation of a very complicated ritual - so my advice
Claire is to read as much as you can on the subject so that
you can better understand what Drawing down the Moon is and why we
do it.
Blessed Be,
Georgia.
